How to Win at UNO for Beginners: Key Strategies and Tips

Sometimes I’m asked how to teach UNO to family members who’ve never played before, and honestly, it’s one of the easier card games to pick up.

It’s got simple rules, a fast pace, and everyone loves the excitement of shouting "UNO!" at the last second. Plus, it’s a great way to bring the family together for some friendly competition.

What You Need to Play

All you need is a standard 52-card deck — or you can grab a UNO deck if you have one. The game works best with 2–10 players, but we usually play with 3–4 for a good balance of strategy and fun.

Setting Up the Game

First, shuffle the deck and deal seven cards to each player. Place the remaining cards in a draw pile face-down. Flip the top card to start the discard pile. This card sets the first suit or action that players must match.

If the first card is a Wild or Wild Draw Four, you can either flip a new card or choose the color yourself — just make sure everyone knows the color you’re going to play next.

How to Play

Players go clockwise. On your turn, you must play a card that matches either the color, number, or symbol of the top card on the discard pile. For example, if the top card is a red 5, you can play any red card or any 5, regardless of suit.

There are special action cards that add variety:

  • Skip – The next player loses their turn.
  • Reverse – Changes the direction of play.
  • Draw Two – The next player draws two cards and loses their turn.
  • Wild – Lets you choose the next color.
  • Wild Draw Four – Lets you choose the next color and forces the next player to draw four cards and skip their turn.

If you can’t play a card, you must draw from the draw pile. If you draw a playable card, you can play it immediately.

Winning the Game

The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round. After each round, players score points based on the value of the cards left in opponents’ hands:

  • Number cards = face value
  • Skip, Reverse, Draw Two = 20 points
  • Wild cards = 50 points

The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.

Tips for Beginners

  • Start with basics: Don’t get overwhelmed by wild cards right away. Master matching colors and numbers first.
  • Think ahead: When you play a Draw Two or Skip card, consider how it affects the next player. It can be a strategic move.
  • Save your wilds: Wild cards are powerful, but using them too early can backfire. Save them for when you’re close to winning or need to change the game’s flow.
  • Watch what others play: Pay attention to which cards your opponents are discarding. It can help you guess what they might have.
  • Use the "UNO!" call wisely: If you have one card left, shout "UNO!" loudly — it adds excitement and keeps everyone on their toes.

Advanced Strategies for New Players

Once you've gotten comfortable with the basics, try these tactics to give yourself an edge:

Play high-value cards early

When you have a high-number card (like a 9 or 10), consider playing it early to score points quickly. It helps reduce the total points your opponents can earn at the end of the round.

Use reverse cards strategically

A Reverse card changes the direction of play, which can disrupt an opponent’s plan. If you’re in a tight spot, playing a Reverse can give you a moment to think or allow someone else to make a mistake.

Control the flow with Skip cards

If someone is about to win, playing a Skip card stops them from taking their turn. It gives you a chance to get back into the game or set up your own win.

Making It Fun

UNO is a great game for younger players because it’s not too complicated, yet there’s still enough strategy to keep things interesting. It’s also a great way to bond with the family, whether you're playing online or in person.
