In our house, we play with a partner, but it can also be played solo or with four players in two teams. The dealer starts by dealing 12 cards to each player, then flips the top card of the stock to establish trump.
Understanding the Basics
Trump Suit
Trump is determined by the suit of the top card from the stock. Cards of the trump suit are higher than all others, except for the Jack of Trump (which is the highest card in the trump suit).
Melding
Melding is one of the unique parts of Pinochle. You score points by forming certain combinations:
- Marriage: A King and Queen of the same suit. This is worth 20 points.
- Double Marriage: Two marriages in the same hand. That’s 40 points.
- Pinochle: A Jack and Queen of the same suit, but in different colors. This is worth 40 points.
- Run: A sequence of four consecutive cards in trump. This is worth 10 points.
Scoring
In Pinochle, you typically play to 1000 points. Players or teams score points by melding and winning tricks. In our house, we often play a simpler version where the first to reach 500 points wins.

Dealing
Each player receives 12 cards. The remaining cards form the stock. The top card of the stock is turned face-up to determine trump.
Bidding
Players bid on how many tricks they think they can take. In our house, we don’t play with a formal bidding system, but it’s a fun way to add some strategy.
Trick-Taking
Tricks are taken by playing the highest card of the led suit. If a trump card is played, it beats any non-trump card. The winner of the trick leads the next one.
Melding During Play
Players can meld during the game. When you meld, you lay down your cards and score points immediately. This is one of the most exciting parts of Pinochle — suddenly, you can gain a big advantage.
Tips for New Players
Start Simple
Don’t worry about going for high scores right away. Focus on learning the melds and understanding the basics. Once you’re comfortable, you can start aiming for bigger melds and more advanced strategies.
